BRISA DO BARU

Never has the combination of concrete and the sea been so harmonious.

Thanks to Chef Dagoberto Torres and his recipes featuring an abundance of seafood and fish, the iconic Copan is infused with a breeze and a tide that we hope will never fade.

A true counter-service restaurant focused on fresh ingredients, Brisa do Baru is now my favorite spot downtown, especially after a delightful bike ride along the Minhocão with my wife. We like to arrive early and sit in front of the garde manger (cold display) to watch the chef de partie and the other cooks at work.

In the spirit of a healthy outing, we stuck to iced tea and went all out on the food. Our favorite, the chora patacon—fried chicken skin with tuna tartare—is always our first choice and we often order it again randomly in the middle of the meal. The house guacamole is good, but I wouldn’t add it as a must-have on the menu (since you can get other more interesting items for the same price). For the crispy bites, we go for squid a la dorada with potato salad (very typical of Spain) or, when available, fried shrimp in a spicy sauce with plenty of cilantro. From the griddle, the Ya que Brisa is unique and almost like a guilty pleasure—grilled pasta with chipotle mayonnaise and shrimp.

Open weekdays for lunch and dinner, Brisa do Baru is a delightful spot to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere in one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods.
